Z Food Farm is a small organic farm located in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
Our mission is to promote food as a powerful cultural force for interacting with our environment & within our communities by providing certified organic, high quality, exciting varieties of vegetables, herbs, & fruits.
Born and raised in Iowa City, I moved to New Jersey to become a farmer.
With a double major in Anthropology ~and~ Environmental Studies, organic farming was my most logical career choice, right?
After all, food is integral to many culural and religious celebrations throughout the world and the impacts of agriculture and food consumption on the environment are dramatic.
But it wasn't until I spent a year at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California and volunteered on a small organic farm that I truly got a feel for farming as a profession.
Tne following spring, while visiting my parents who had recently relocated to New Jersey, I met the owner of Cherry Grove Organic Farm, Matt Conver. We had an immediate connection, and it was obvious my next step was full immersion as an intern.
Matt was a true inspiration, and for three years (2004-2016) I experienced what it takes to start a farm from scratch with a small loan and build a successful business through hard work and lots of passion.
My next opportunity came as the inaugural farm manager at Gravity Hill Farm in Titusville N.J. I established the farm's organic certification and for three years (2007-2009) developed an even deeper understanding how to start and manage a farm.
In late 2009 I was presented with an opportunity to lease land in Lawrenceville, N.J. to start a farm business of my own. With a lot of encouragement and support from friends and family, Z Food Farm was born in 2010!
Every year brings lots of successes & challenges, but I can't imagine spending my life doing anything else.
